Sevilla Coffeeshop

Sevilla Coffeeshop lies on the Utrechtsestraat, in between Fredriksplein and Muntplein. From outside it looks a bit like those coffeeshops we used to go to when nothing else was open or nearby: cheap and a bit run down, usually with heaps of White Widow in stock with no Sativas on offer. Neon lights and a tacky Santa Claus welcome us as we step inside. Mirrors, a Star Wars pinball machine and high bar stools in the front room, as well as a bar with a cheerful Eastern European guy behind the counter.
He lets us inspect two of the hashes in stock (always ask to see the goods!). One looks like charcoal and the other, a Manali, looks like a prime example of Indian black hashish. The choice is easy, we get a gram of Manali for € 10.

We sit order a hot chocolate and to go with it, and sit down in the back room, which has a bit of a café feel to it, with kitchen tables and chairs, candles and plastic Christmas décor on each table. Bob Marley hangs on bad print on the wall, the speakers play good chilled out hip hop, although the volume is rather high and not so good for conversation. We roll a joint with the Manali. Although this piece of hash looks potentially very, very good, the smell, or rather the lack of it, warns us that this is not real Manali. It is hardly even real hash. It simply doesn’t smell like good hash should smell. There are a lot of soapbars going around, and hash is notoriously getting more and more difficult to find in high quality, and it looks as if we have just been sold a lemon. Smoking the joint is not very pleasurable; it smells funky, and not in a good way. Also, this joint really doesn't taste good. All it does is make us crave a proper spliff.

So we kill the joint, finish our drinks and get a move on. Sevilla is not a bad place, but we feel a little unlucky with our choice of hash. Also, Babba reports that the toilets were filthy and could not be locked. n spite of good music and a really friendly guy working there, we were not too impressed with Sevilla, although we suspect that the weed on the menu might have been substantially better than the onion we just smoked, as good marijuana is overflowing in Amsterdam, and it is much rarer to come across plain bad weed than it is hash. So if you’re passing by, we highly recommend that you go for the greens rather than the hash, and just enjoy the café feel and the good hip hop. If Sevilla doesn't really do it for you though, aim for the cluster of excellent coffeeshops around the Spui instead, or even head over to Mellow Yellow or The Little. The night ain't over yet :)
